13 January 2010Local housing tenants in the north of England and Scotland are being called on to come up with a business idea that will benefit the local community, and be in with a chance of winning £10,000.
'The Big Community Idea' is offering aspiring entrepreneurs the chance to turn their business dreams into reality to win a cash prize as well as free mentoring and office space to run their business from. The competition has been launched by Connaught's MD Peter Jones and Secret Millionaire star and seriel entrepreneur, Carl Hopkins. Connaught, the UK's largest social housing repairs and maintenance provider, are being supported by partners Business Link, Easyspace, First Port and Enterprise UK.
Linda Crosby, Connaught's customer experience manager said: "We're very excited about this competition which will have both a Scottish and North England winner. The deadline for entries is 5 February so anyone with an idea should waste no time and submit them quickly." She added: "Entries must have a sustainable focus and be able to show business acumen whilst reflecting the local challenges/problems within their area."
The competition is also open to those already running a business but need support to take it to the next level.
Ten finalists will be invited to a workshop in late February when they will be coached through a programme of business modules. These finalists will then present their idea to a panel of judges in a final pitch day. The winners will be announced in March 2010.
